How to Make a Non-Toxic Household Cleaning Kit.

Hi MB&C-ers!
I've posted a great article on tips to make non-toxic cleaning supplies. It's a great way to protect yourself and our environment for suffering the effects of the chemicals found in household cleaning products.
xoxo,
c.

By Annie B. Bond, author of Clean & Green (Ceres Press, 1990).

Most modern synthetic cleaning products are based on age-old formulas using natural ingredients that were passed down through the generations because the chemistry was right. Going back to the original naturally derived ingredients is a way to make cleaning products that work, don't pollute and save you money. Most are found in your kitchen cupboards. Mix and match with well-chosen and environmentally friendly green cleaning products found in health food stores, and you can easily and simply transform your home into a non-toxic and healthy haven.

Non-toxic cleaning can give you a deep feeling of gratification in knowing that your family's health is protected, and that your home is a place for your bodies to rest and recuperate rather than promote harm.

SIMPLE SOLUTION:  Making your own nontoxic cleaning kit will take you no time at all with these simple, straightforward directions, and with this kit you will be supplied with enough cleaning product for months of cleaning.

As an added bonus, ounce for ounce homemade cleaning formulas cost about one-tenth the price of their commercial counterpart—and that includes costly, but worthwhile essential oils, and concentrated, all-purpose detergents for homemade recipes.

SUPPLIES
Baking soda
Washing soda
White distilled vinegar
A good liquid soap or detergent
Tea tree oil
6 clean spray bottles
2 glass jars

Read more about these 5 basic cleaning ingredients, and a vinegar update.

CREAMY SOFT SCRUBBER
Simply pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda into a bowl, and add enough liquid detergent to make a texture like frosting. Scoop the mixture onto a sponge, and wash the surface. This is the perfect recipe for cleaning the bathtub because it rinses easily and doesn't leave grit.

Note: Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin to the mixture and store in a sealed glass jar, to keep the product moist. Otherwise just make as much as you need at a time.

WINDOW CLEANER
1/4-1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent
3 tablespoons vinegar
2 cups water
Spray bottle

Put all the ingredients into a spray bottle, shake it up a bit, and use as you would a commercial brand. The soap in this recipe is important. It cuts the wax residue from the commercial brands you might have used in the past.

OVEN CLEANER
1 cup or more baking soda
Water
A squirt or two of liquid detergent

Sprinkle water generously over the bottom of the oven, then cover the grime with enough baking soda that the surface is totally white. Sprinkle some more water over the top. Let the mixture set overnight. You can easily wipe up the grease the next morning because the grime will have loosened. When you have cleaned up the worst of the mess, dab a bit of liquid detergent or soap on a sponge, and wash the remaining residue from the oven. If this recipe doesn't work for you it is probably because you didn't use enough baking soda and/or water.

ALL-PURPOSE SPRAY CLEANER
1/2 teaspoon washing soda
A dab of liquid soap
2 cups hot tap water

Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake until the washing soda has dissolved. Apply and wipe off with a sponge or rag.

FURNITURE POLISH
1/2 teaspoon oil, such as olive (or jojoba, a liquid wax)
1/4 cup vinegar or fresh lemon juice
Mix the ingredients in a glass jar. Dab a soft rag into the solution and wipe onto wood surfaces. Cover the glass jar and store indefinitely.

VINEGAR DEODORIZER
Keep a clean spray bottle filled with straight 5 percent vinegar in your kitchen near your cutting board and in your bathroom and use them for cleaning. I often spray the vinegar on our cutting board before going to bed at night, and don't even rinse but let it set overnight. The smell of vinegar dissipates within a few hours. Straight vinegar is also great for cleaning the toilet rim. Just spray it on and wipe off.

MOLD KILLERS

Tea Tree Treasure
Nothing natural works for mold and mildew as well as this spray. I've used it successfully on a moldy ceiling from a leaking roof, on a musty bureau, a musty rug, and a moldy shower curtain. Tea tree oil is expensive, but a little goes a very long way. Note that the smell of tea tree oil is very strong, but it will dissipate in a few days.

2 teaspoons tea tree oil
2 cups water

Combine in a spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas. Do not rinse. Makes two cups.

Vinegar Spray
Straight vinegar reportedly kills 82 percent of mold. Pour some white distilled vinegar straight into a spray bottle, spray on the moldy area, and let set without rinsing if you can put up with the smell. It will dissipate in a few hours.

HELPFUL HINTS:  Make sure to label all your homemade cleaning products, and keep them away from pets and children.

World Food Program.

World Food Program

The World Food Program fights to eradicate hunger.

Charlie's Angel Drew Barrymore is a real-life angel as an Ambassador Against Hunger for the World Food Program (WFP). The actress decided to take on global hunger after a 2005 trip to the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, where kids live in shacks and often go to school with empty stomachs.

When disasters like the Indian Ocean tsunami strike, people who have lost everything rely on the WFP to deliver food assistance. The WFP is the world's frontline organization in the fight against hunger, and every year, it helps feed more than 70 million people in nearly 80 of the world's poorest countries.

The WFP has a dream—to feed 10 million more children in Africa by Thanksgiving Day. If every viewer gives $50 to help fill a child's cup for a year, they will reach that target.

Even a small donation will go a long way. Porridge, rice or beans—it takes just 25 cents to fill one of the red cups WFP uses to give hungry kids regular meals. This food will not only feed bodies and minds, it will transform lives. Join Drew Barrymore and help us "Fill the Cup."

Now, that's what I call a turn-off.

I recently joined The Nature Conservatory , and have found countless articles of useful information on their website. The following is an article on conserving energy regarding leaving your computer on. And if you're reading this blog, you must be using a computer, so this directly concerns YOU!)

"We all know that turning off your computer when it’s not in use is a smart way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and help fight against the effects of climate change.

In fact, if you leave your computer on 24 hours a day, it could be responsible for releasing up to 1,500 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. The flying-toaster screen saver is cool…but is it that cool?

But if you have to leave your computer on, here's a way you can make up for it: By joining a distributed computing network that models the effects of climate change.

Distributed computing networks harness the unused power of thousands of personal computers to perform complicated tasks.

For instance, climateprediction.net is a distributed network run by Oxford University and other partners that helps climate scientists run climate models on networked computers when those computers are on, but are not running at full capacity.

Once you join the network, you will be asked to download a climate model from the website. It will then run automatically in the background whenever your computer is switched on. When the climate model is finished running, the results are automatically sent back to the site over the Internet for analysis.

Users are invited to watch the climate model process if they like, and are provided with a summary of the model’s results through climateprediction.net. Or you could simply let the model run and never think about it again.

Either way, “always on” computer geeks can now contribute to climate change solutions and keep their flying toasters."

Purchase carbon offsets for your holiday travels...

I recently stumbled across the Sustainable Travel International website...

Are you traveling this Thanksgiving season?

Become carbon neutral - Reduce your CO2 emissions and invest in Carbon Offsets

Addressing the challenge of global climate change will require a sustained effort for many years to come. Supporting legislation that requires mandatory greenhouse gas reductions is a first best solution, reducing CO2 emissions is a second best solution, and offsetting unavoidable emissions is a third best solution.

STI is addressing global climate change by educating others about how to reduce CO2 emissions and by supporting high quality, high impact carbon offset projects around the world. To protect your investment, all of the projects we offer are verified and or certified by independent third parties and are managed by other non-profits.

Our carbon offset portfolio features MyClimate™ Verified Emission Reductions and Certified Emission Reductions, Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) Green Tags, and Conservation Carbon from Conservation International, which are among the best offsets available in the marketplace.

Join our clients and supporters, take concrete action to fight global climate change today and become carbon neutral. If you don't, who will?

http://www.sustainabletravelinternational.org/documents/op_carbonoffsets.html

I calculated my carbon footprint, and I need to make a purchase of $18.42 to offset the amount of carbon used for me to fly round-trip to Louisiana for Christmas. Not too bad for a 3000 mile trip when you think about it...

On the Naughty List.

I don't necessarily condone everything that Forrest Ethics advises below, but I do believe it's important that we are aware of companies that are depleting our natural resources. The following was posted by the Forrest Ethics website :

Can you guess who is on our naughty list this holiday season? That's right -- Sears. Help us give them their holiday gift -- a big lump of coal! Since 1880, Sears has been famous for their catalogs, but now it is 2007 and Sears must face this new era of climate change and recognize their role in it. Sears is the largest catalog company that has refused to adopt a progressive environmental policy. For the past month, activists have been delivering letters, sending emails and organizing storefront demonstrations to make it clear to Sears that almost 120 years of destroying forests for catalogs is too long! Over 2300 people have sent emails to Sears telling them to stop destroying Endangered Forests, and dozens of people have taken action at Sears stores. Learn more here:

http://catalogcutdown.org/article.php?list=class&class=20

On December 4, 2007, join our first International Day of Action to demand Sears change its paper policy. We need your help organizing events in your community. Sign up now: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/forestethics/signUp.jsp?key=2815&t=catalogcutdown.dwt

Planning an action can be simple. You can * Organize an event at a Sears storefront and deliver lumps of coal * Flyer and postcard at a Sears store or on your campus or in your community * Organize an event on your campus or in your community * Host a letter-writing party * And more! To help make this event a success, we're here to help. We'll answer questions, provide materials, and anything else you need. We are in this together, so let's show Sears it's time to get off the naughty list and make nice! Sign up for our International Day of Action for the Sears campaign and help save Santa's reindeer (a.k.a. the caribou) this holiday season. They are losing their home in the Boreal Forest because companies like Sears continue to source fiber for their catalogs from endangered caribou habitat. Sign up here: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/forestethics/signUp.jsp?key=2815&t=catalogcutdown.dwt

Thanks for taking the time to read this! Hopefully we are able to make even a small difference with this information...

xoxo,
